- Deborah Smith’s work focuses on her fascination with the familiar and intensifying aspects of that, through the creation of abstract forms using video, sound, paper and found objects. Because of the subject matter of the work, the image is instantly recognisable to the viewer, yet it is an image that usually goes by unnoticed. Smith’s role as an artist is to recreate and enhance these images through basic materials and display. By capturing her visual and aural experience of the banal she creates a moment of reflection for the viewer by focusing attention on the contradictory element of noticing the unnoticed. Smith’s work in 2012 has focused on installation and recreating the banal through larger forms of display, thus pushing the boundaries of her work and the unnoticed.
